It’s Always Tomato Season with Backyard Farms Tomatoes
Oh New England. How you tease us with your beautiful summers and then have us waiting anxiously anticipating warmer seasons all cold winter long. Raise your hand if you’ve been dying for the weather to turn up. Me!!!
As a home cook, one of my favorite things about New England is our bountiful acres of farms and fresh produce. There is nothing like stopping at a farmers stand at the end of day from a long beach trip for fresh fruits and veggies. I’m about to let you in on a little secret that will change the way you shop this spring and summer…

I recently learned about Backyard Farms Tomatoes and let me tell you, I stumbled upon a New England gem. In the heart of Madison, Maine stands a 42-acre green house where the most delicious baubles of red, green and gold are created hydroponically. Hy-dro-ponic whhhhat???

Hydroponic is the growth of soilless plants. Instead of soil, Backyard Farms grows its plants in a substance called rock wool which is a mixture of basalt and chalk. It looks like cotton candy and is dense enough to keep the roots constantly hydrated, yet porous enough to allow the root system to grow and spread. The biggest advantage? Using the most precious resource – water. The greenhouse is equipped with a gutter system that filters rain water through a 13.8 million gallon retention pond. 98% of the water Backyard Farms uses to irrigate and feed their tomato plants comes from the natural environment.

Water isn’t the only thing Backyard Farms is efficient with. Their system is 10 times more efficient than a conventional farm which helps them produce 25 to 30 million pounds of fresh tomatoes every year! The only thing more fascinating than that is the fact that they use a personal gardener system where growers like Kelsey Brown tend 10 rows of plants from the time they arrive as 18” seedlings to the day they’re replaced 40-46 weeks later!
