Tips for Peel and Stick Wall Paper

This post contains tips for peel and stick wall paper and may include affiliate links for my favorite peel and stick wall papers.

When it came time to decorating the girls rooms of our new home, I wanted to give each of their rooms a personality just like they have. With the walls painted a neutral color, peel and stick wallpaper is a great way to give each room a focal wall and a bit of color.

Peel and stick wallpaper allows you to have the fun of a wallpaper without damaging your walls or making too long term of a commitment.

For Mia’s room I chose this gorgeous blue color with dancing cranes and she loved it. I wasn’t sure about putting birds on the wall but the result actually is gorgeous. It’s now my favorite room.

For Bailey’s room we chose a white and gold geometric pattern peel and stick wall paper. The papers were a bit different and we learned some things along the way by getting them up on the walls.

Tips for Installing Peel and Stick Wall:

  1. Choose a pattern that fits your aesthetic and personality. Wallpaper should be used to mix it up!
  2. Measure as accurately as you can and if needed get a little extra. If you’re using a pattern like I did with the birds, you’ll need even more extra to ensure the prints align correctly.
  3. Ensure you have a sharp razor tool handy. You will need it to trim edges around windows and outlets.
  4. Another helpful tool is a Wall Paper Smoothing Kit. You will need it to ensure no bumps are in your paper. Using the plastic edge, push the bubbles out towards the side until there are none left.
  5. The thickness and quality of the paper matters. The more expensive paper was noticeably thicker and therefore had less bumps in it when you place it on the wall.
  6. Start by peeling the backing of the wall paper off and carefully aligning it as straight as possible with the edge fo the wall. Place on the way and smooth out the edges.
  7. Use a share razor blade to trim all edges on the top and the bottom.
  8. If the bumps continue, use a hair dryer on low while using a plastic smoother to edge out the bumps.
  9. Grab a friend. Getting the perfect alignment can always use a hand!
  10. It’s OK if it’s not perfect. Step back and look at your new wall 🙂

Does Peel and Stick Wall Paper leave behind any damage?

Not at all! It was almost magical. It was also easy to pick up and replace back on the wall.

Is Peel and Stick Wall Paper expensive?

The rolls I purchased ranged from $35 to $89 per a roll. Keep this is mind when you’re choosing your focal wall and certainly before you aim to do a whole room. I didn’t realize at first the total cost so you just need to plan accordingly!
